We know that in today’s economic scenario, buying a reliable used car is one of the best financial decisions we can make. But there is one question you should always keep in mind, and that is, how much mileage is good for a used car?
What is mileage of a car?
Milaege is defined as how many kilometers the is vehicle going to run per litre of fuel. It is also used to depict how many kilometers/ miles the vehicle has covered in its life time.
What Mileage is good for a used car explained!
As a general rule, you should assume that the average car owner puts 12,000 miles (19312.128 Kms) on a car each year.
If a used car has 50,000 miles on it and is in good working condition, then it’s probably an excellent buy. However, a cheaper vehicle with 100,000 miles or more can still last you many years if it’s in good condition, and you maintain it.
So, at the end we would recommend you to see if a car has accumulated far more than 12,000 miles per year, you may want to consider a different vehicle.
But then if you are into cars built by specific countries then lets dive into two of them!
- German: There is a saying about german cars. They last forever because you rebuild them within the life of the car. Also parts are expensive. I would not go much about 100 thousand miles on them. Repairs occur often and have very expensive parts.
- Japanese/ Korean: This is your Honda, Hyundai, Toyota. You should avoid doing more than 200,000 miles on these. They can all go well beyond that, but repairs will become almost a weekly occurrence as the slow wearing parts start to wear out.
These cars are great, but the reason they are being sold is probably because of all the repairs, which are now worth more than the car. If you are buying a high mileage car for lets say a child or student, we would recommend around 180 thousand as a good start. It is cheap and you can drive it into the ground and not worry about it.
Good Mileage or age of a used car?
Before you search for your ideal used car , it’s really important to know how mileage and age differ from one another. The number of miles on a vehicle’s odometer is one of the most important factors determining the price of a pre-owned car. It’s an indication of the amount of wear and tear the car has sustained over time. As such, a vehicle that has higher mileage will most-likely be costlier than a similar vehicle with fewer miles. Usually, a car having lower mileage also offers better driving quality.
